Cricket: £2,000 raised as Northwood remember Hilary

On the field during the Hilary Witcomb Day cricket match were, from left Ashley Goldsmith, Dan Newman, Gavin Paddock, Nathan Proud with Ryan Chessell batting.

MORE than £2,000 was raised during the Hilary Witcomb Day cricket match at Northwood on Sunday.

The 30-over match between Northwood and the Full Tossers was held in memory of long-standing Northwood member Hilary Witcomb, who died in February.

Northwood batted first, making 211-7, with top scorers Dan Newman (50 not out), Simon Goldsmith (38), Ryan Chessell (30 retired) and Dave Neal (30 retired).

Pick of the bowlers for the Full Tossers was Andy Bond, who took 2-8.

In reply, Hilary’s husband Dave Witcomb scored a fitting top score of 70 for the Full Tossers. But, unfortunately his efforts were not enough as they crumbled to 146 all out.

Steve Allwood, Simon Goldsmith, Dave Neal and Ben Baker all picked up two wickets each for Northwood.

Those who attended took part in a raffle, with a number of prizes donated by Island businesses.

Northwood’s Ash Goldsmith said: "It was brilliant to see so many people support the event, turn up in pink and raise money for such worthwhile causes in memory of Hilary."

The raffle and other competitions raised a total of £2,061.30 for The Earl Mountbatten Hospice, Cancer Research and Macmillan Cancer Support.
