The Foreign Office has confirmed that permission had been granted for Benjamin Cooper's body to be exhumed and repatriated.
Mr Cooper, 63, of West Hanworth, suffered a heart attack while on a day trip to Sicily from Malta, where he had been staying.
He was buried in Naples after an Italian family identified his body believing it to be their missing relative. The truth was only discovered in February when the missing Italian returned home.
