CRICKET ASHLEY Goldsmith produced a devastating performance with the ball to steer Northwood to victory in the Island Senior Webservices Cup final on Sunday.
After four years of being runners-up, Northwood made sure they would buck the trend and bowled opponents Shanklin out for just 67, to win by 102 runs.
Northwood batted first and made 169-6, opener Nick Heelan remaining at the crease throughout and grinding out 47 runs. This kept the innings ticking over as Ben Duggan was run out for 16, John Barrett departed for 21 and the usually influential Kerry Rice and Chris Williams falling cheaply as well. But captain Dave Neal provided a late wag with 44 to make the score more respectable.
Shanklin must have felt they were in with a good chance of chasing down the run rate but Ashley, together with his cousin, Nathan, made sure that would not happen.
Between them they took nine of the ten wickets, Nathan finishing on 4-16, and Ashley taking a man of the match-winning 5-6 from his eight overs.
He took out Mark Ringer for 7, James Lucy for 1, Michael Dignan for a duck, top scorer Andy White for 27 and the final wicket, Tom Quaife, for 1.
