Danny’s chance to shine

CRICKETISLAND cricketer Danny Briggs will be hoping to make his mark alongside the world’s best young players when he competes in the Under-19 Cricket World Cup in New Zealand during the next fortnight.

Danny is part of the England squad which faces tough competition from India, as well as Hong Kong and Afghanistan, in Group A of the 16-team tournament.

The former Carisbrooke High School pupil, who plays for Ventnor and Hampshire, did well with bat and ball for the England Under-19s in Bangladesh at the end of last year and had a good season for Hampshire.

The 17-year-old left arm spinner broke into the county first team and took 3-62 against Somerset, including the prized wicket of former England opener Marcus Trescothick.

Now he will be hoping to help England to glory in the junior world cup but will have to bowl well on New Zealand wickets, which are not renowned for being friendly to spin bowlers.

England begin their campaign tomorrow (Saturday) against Hong Kong in the town of Lincoln then take on Afghanistan in Christchurch on Monday, before the potential group decider against India back in Lincoln on Thursday next week.

If England qualify there is a Super League system of quarter finals, semi finals and a final in Lincoln on January 30.
