CRICKET Godshill’s Mew family condemned Northwood II to defeat at Park Road in Division 2 of the Harwoods Renault IW League on Saturday.
Northwood reached 187-6, Steve James reaching 70, with Bjorn Graves supporting with 30.
In reply, Phil Mew hit 77 not out, while Trevor Mew struck a half-century, as Godshill won comfortably, with eight wickets in hand.
Elsewhere in Division 2, Freshwater had some high scores in their card as they defeated Bembridge by 102 runs. M. Lofthouse hit 104, while Graeme Gosden reached 62 not out and Jason Swain added 50, as Freshwater reached 291-5. Bembridge were all out for 189, Lofthouse taking 3-18. Phil McDonald top scored for Bembridge, with 48.
In a low-scoring match, Newport II defeated Shanklin II by 41 runs. Newport reached 174, Willie Watson leading the way with 37. A huge 68 extras boosted their total.
In reply, Shanklin II were all out for 133, S. Winterbottom hitting 35, and Jim Thorn making 31. Newport’s J. Snow took 4-8, while Sam Edwards took 3-10.
Arreton were awarded their match, after opponents Ryde Cavaliers II failed to raise a side.
Meanwhile, in Division 1, Kerry Rice was the key player in Cowes’s five-wicket win over Northwood.
Northwood posted 221-9, Nick Heelan finishing on 68 not out, with his brother, Matt, reaching 51. After a middle-order slump, Andy Ball (30) and Nathan Goldsmith (21) boosted the tally with some lovely boundaries.
Kerry Rice took 4-49, before leading the Cowes chase, with an unbeaten 102. Scott Rice helped with 49.
GKN edged an 18-run win over Shanklin. Ben Wadmore (54) and Liam Ringer (34) helped GKN to 196-6 and while Simon Mead (35) and Steve Fisher (33) did well to keep Shanklin in the chase, Steve Whorwood took 4-49 and Shanklin could only muster 178.
St Helens continue to charge, after a huge 195-run win over Ryde Cavaliers at Smallbrook Stadium.
The visitors posted 282-9, Lee Brown leading the way once more with 92. Marc Allen added 73, and H. Rockley hit 61.
In reply, Cavaliers could only muster 87, D. Keller the only player to hit 20 runs.
Allen was most effective with the ball, taking 4-30, while Hadleigh Carkeet, Duncan Spite and Chris Wright took two wickets apiece.
Chasing a large Newport total of 260, a poor batting performance saw Ventnor IIIs dismissed for only 68. Newport’s leading batsmen were Stuart Gurney, with 67, and Harry Dye, with 49.
In reply, no batsman reached more than 20, as Louis Payne took 4-16 and Harry Dye took 3-15.
