CRICKETNEWPORT sealed the Harwoods Renault IW League, Division 1 championship, with a convincing win over Northwood on Saturday.
In a low-scoring match, Harry Dye’s 74 and Stuart Gurney’s 66 was the highlight in the hosts’ 177-5. Steve Allwood took 3-19.
In reply, Newport were on a roll as Chris Williams, Matt Heelan and Phil Reed departed cheaply.
A rallying 34 from Nick Heelan gave the visitors hope but Harry Dye’s performance got even better as he took 5-18, as Northwood were skittled for just 91.
St Helens, the only real challengers for Newport’s crown, needed around 16 points from their match against St Helens.
However, in high-scoring game, Cowes took the spoils.
St Helens batted first and a tremendous 144 not out from Hadleigh Carkeet meant they finished on 302-7.
In reply, Cowes scored steadily throughout, with 88 from George Hatt, 61 from Hugh Calloway and 53 from Kerry Rice.
Lee Brown (4-53) and Chris Wright (3-60) led the St Helens bowling attack but it was not quite enough, as Cowes reached the total with one wicket in hand.
Ryde Cavaliers defeated GKN by two wickets.
GKN were all out for 94, A. Cox top-scoring with 26 as S. Moxlow took 4-20.
In reply, Moxlow hit 42 not out and, while wickets fell cheaply around him, his side did just enough to win.
Shanklin enjoyed a win over Ventnor III, thanks in the main to Nick Holland’s fine 108 not out at Steephill.
Mark Ringer supported brilliantly with 93, as Shanklin reached 279-4.
Ventnor III could only muster 105 in reply, Andy White taking 5-14 for the visitors.
The Division 2B match between Ryde Cavaliers II and Shanklin II was not played due to the pitch being unfit.
