Hercules Wimbledon's over 50s cross-country team came away with the bronze medal after coming third in the South of England championships at Bexley.

Surrey champions for the past two years over both road and country, Hercules' most successful men's squad since the 1970s almost took silver as they finished just seven points adrift of Invicta, East Kent.

Led home by a resurgent Vince Hancock who, after mixing it with the leaders early on, came 11th out of 144 runners. Great support was given by Marco Ciglia who, in placing 20th, showed that the virus problems that dogged him earlier in the season are well and truly gone.

Completing the team were consistent Dennis Williams in 26th place and Graham Bradbury having his best outing to place 30th.

The over 40s team had to settle for 19th from the 33 teams contesting that age group with Martin O'Halloran in 45th place as Stuart Littlewood, Simon Ingall and Alan Grimes completed the side.

Earlier in the week Hercules' track and field men came away from the Surrey indoor championships with a haul of three golds and three silvers.

John Brown took the shot title as club president Dave Orchard gave notice of promise for the summer with victory in the long jump and silver in both pole vault and 80m hurdles.

Morris Tolaram sped to victory in the under 20s 60m sprint while his older brother Simon took silver in the senior 60m event.
