ENFIELD and Haringey's Greater London Assembly member Nicky Gavron has accepted a top job as the capital's Deputy Mayor.

In doing so, it appears that Ms Gavron has put the mockers on new Mayor Ken Livingstone's bid to take legal action against the Government over the Tube.

Her acceptance letter to Mr Livingstone says that she accepts the post on condition that he must not take any action on the tube issue until an independent panel has examined funding options.

Ms Gavron is also insisting that as Deputy Mayor she will strive to achieve Labour's policy agenda.

She adds that the Labour Group will regularly review co-operation with the Mayor as the party does not want to see Mr Livingstone using his position as a political platform.

Announcing her decision to accept the job, Ms Gavron said: 'It was essential to get a clear agreement with the Mayor on issues such as the funding of the Tube.

'I could not be Deputy Mayor unless Ken had agreed to avoid constant conflict with the Government.

'We welcome the opportunity to start making London a better place for all Londoners in this critical first year.'

It is not yet clear if this new role will signal the end of Ms Gavron's days as a Haringey councillor.

And she could also take up a key role as head of the GLA's spacial development strategy.

A spokeswoman for Ms Gavron said: 'She is beginning to feel as if she can't deliver to local residents as effectively as in the past.'
