WOULD you like to take part in free workshops at Wight Proms?

The new festival, to be held at Northwood House in August, has announced details of its workshops, which will give more than 200 people fully-immersive involvement in the arts.

As a result, 60 children will perform as part of Wight at the Musicals on the Saturday night.

Those interested can apply now on www.wightproms.co.uk/workshops.

Musical theatre workshops take place on Thursday, August 16, from noon to 3pm for seven to 11 year olds, and from 4pm to 7pm for 12 to 18 year olds.

The aim is to inspire the next generation of budding young performers, by transporting them into the world of musical theatre. They will learn a song and dance from a musical currently showing in London's West End, and perform the song at Wight Proms on August 18.

Other opportunities for the public are the following percussion and drumming workshops on Friday, August 17:

Boomwhackers and bamboo tamboo: 12 noon to 1pm (ages six to 11). Have some noisy fun with these easy-to-play plastic tubes. The upbeat Caribbean rhythms will get your hands and feet moving.

STOMP-style body percussion: 2pm to 3pm (ages eight to 13). Who knew you could make so many sounds just by hitting yourself?

Samba drumming: 3.15pm to 4.15pm (ages eight to 13). Create the spirit of Rio on the IW on authentic Brazilian percussion instruments.

STOMP-style body percussion: 4.30pm to 5.30pm (ages 14-plus, including adults).

Samba drumming: 5.45pm to 6.45pm (ages 14-plus, including adults).

Wight Proms will feature open-air concerts Wight at the Musicals on Saturday, August 18 and Last Wight of the Proms on Sunday, August 19.

The festival climax will be a rousing celebration of British music and flag-waving, including Pomp and Circumstance, and Jerusalem.
