IT WAS an appropriate tribute to the man who founded Vectis Corps of Drums 25 years ago — a concert in his honour.

The band got together with Trident Concert Band in memory of Andy Gustar, who died in November.

Andy was also a butcher, well-known on the Island for his business Hamilton's Fine Foods.

The concert, held at St John's Church in Newport, was attended by members of Andy's family, and an audience of around 125 people.

Jennie Thompson conducted the concert, which saw eight new drums being used for the first time.

She said: "It was a really good concert with a great atmosphere and the audience really seemed to enjoy it — the bands certainly enjoyed playing."

Among the highlights was a glockenspiel section, and the rousing marches, favourites from films and musicals, Lord of the Dance tribute and tunes from the Second World War era.

More than £500 was raised, which will go to Mountbatten, and the Newport Carisbrooke Royal British Legion branch.
