HOLY Trinity Church Bembridge hosted 26 flower arrangements over the bank holiday weekend on the theme 100 years of the RAF'.

Visitors found arrangements full of invention and information as well as beautiful flowers.

The Sanctuary was the work of Diane Bown, whose husband's grandfather had been serving in the Royal Flying Corps when in 1918 it became part of the RAF.

An original propeller and an early flying helmet from that time were on show.

The Church Mice used lolly sticks as planes.

A Spitfire made in flowers drew much attention, other especially popular topics were the Forgotten Air Force with its sari, the plotting board linked to the Island radar defences, the Dam Busters and Air to Air Refuelling.

Many of the arrangements were made by local organisations like the Women's Institute, the Townswomen's Guild, the RNLI, the heritage and horticultural societies and the community library.

There were also a number of arrangements created in memory of family members and local people, illustrated with their story and pictures.

Organiser Olive Light said: "This has been a stunning show, and we and our visitors have learnt a lot about our history as well."
