THEY are cute, have three webbed toes and live at the back of the Wight.

However, the existence of the IW Widgit, has been a closely guarded secret - until now.

Island illustrator and author, Nick Pointing, who also owns the famous Chitty Chitty Bang Bang flying car has written a humorous book which takes a poetical look at the mythical creatures which live in the Island's many chines.

The beautifully illustrated book shows how the Widgit came under threat when the back of the Wight was opened up for easy access and became populated by cats and humans.

The Widgit hangs on by a thread, turning the rare nocturnal animals into a myth.

Half poetry and filled with Island dialect, the book is a humourous look at a the myths of Widgits and culminates in a 'Save the Widgit' campaign.

Chine Widgits is printed by Motley Play Hut Books and is available from Waterstones in Newport, priced at £9.99.
