EVERYTHING Isle of Wight has inspired newly-formed band Vectian.

Even the name means someone or something from the IW.

Their first concert will be held at Quay Arts on August 18, in aid of popular Island charity, the IW Donkey Sanctuary.

The band has been formed by Chris Hirst, who is head of music at Christ the King College.

He has been composing music off and on since 2001, but hadn't done anything to bring it into the public domain until this year. He has now written enough for a full concert, and has gathered some of the very best local talent to play with him.

Chris's first, and arguably most important find, was the singer.

"The singer is a vital part and I thought of a former student at Christ the King, Polly Green, who always stood out for her talent," he said.

"I then came across cellist Philip Grainger and accordionist Rene Mairis, both well known Island musicians, who were both very keen on the music and recognised the potential."

They have worked to develop a distinctive Island identity, with the IW being the inspiration for many songs. One is about daybreak on Culver Cliff, others reflect the seasons, and the sea, and all the videos are shot to feature Island scenes.

The instruments are an unusual combination of accordion, cello, voice and mandora, a type of lute that Chris had made especially.

Polly, 19, has just finished a two-year scholarship at Chetham's School of Music in Manchester as a first study soprano, and she also plays piano and oboe. She will study at Trinity Laban Conservatoire in London from September and hopes to pursue a singing career.

The concert starts at 7pm and advance tickets will cost just £5. They are available from www.quayarts.org or the IW Donkey Sanctuary.
