Trinity School is making its mark in sporting excellence having helped build a reputation for excellence across the board - whether it be rugby, swimming, cross-country, water polo or hockey. The Shirley Park school's exploits in the sporting arena have led to some exceptional feats in the recent past and that success shows no sign of relenting.

The strength of last year's first rugby XV was such they went the whole season undefeated. Nine of that side represented Surrey with several featuring at an even higher level. Steffan Hughes played for the England U16s and is now setting his sights on the England U18 squad. Old boy Kieron Roche has just been chosen to play for the England Students XV and former hooker Alan Hayes was picked for the London & South East England's U18 team.

Deputy head Andrew Halls pointed out that last year's side was exceptionally good and although this year's first XV will have to go some way to emulate them, the future success of the school is in good hands.

It is not just the rugby though. Fifteen-year-old David Bennett was one of two individual Trinity record breakers at the English Schools Swimm-ing Association Finals earlier this year, taking the 100m butterfly title. Top hockey prospect Jonathon Bowes is in the final 35 for the England U15 hockey squad and the water polo teams are all London and South East champions in their respective age groups.

It has certainly been a fruitful year though the school's top sports stars know they still have a lot to live up to if they are to follow in the footsteps of one ex-pupil and now Surrey cricket star Mark Butcher. Last summer he reached the height of his profession when he played for England against Australia in the Ashes having learnt his trade as a youngster at Trinity. Watch the Guardian sports pages for

future England stars.
