In her article entitled "Euro Talk," Pauline Green MEP for London North takes a dig at the House of Lords for exercising its historic right to question this government's ludicrous pledge to implement voting by proportional representation in the forthcoming Euro Elections.
Proportional representation is a very dangerous way to elect governments. The only benefactors of such a system of voting are parties with marginal support -- such as the Liberals -- and it gives a foothold for extremist parties to gain election. An additional reason for opposing PR is because it makes weak governments and the whole country could be held to ransom by some insignificant party's demands. It should also be noted that this government has chosen to pick its candidates by a closed list. This means that the electorate will have no say in which individual represents them in the European Parliament.
I applaud the House of Lords on its stance and support it all the way. Simon Rubner,
