KNOWN as the bible for Solent sailors, when the little book Solent Hazards first appeared in 1985, it was a godsend to the racing fraternity, which could gain advantage over competitors from its contents.
Those armed with confidence resulting from studying the text and photographs were able to achieve big gains, particularly beating against the tide.
As time went by — and after tens of thousands of copies of Solent Hazards had been sold — the cruising sailor became aware of the advantages of knowing Solent topography, resulting in few Solent craft sailing without a copy of Solent Hazards on board.
The sixth edition is different. It is larger, 25 by 190 cm, allowing more detail in the photographs. Most photographs have been updated to show changes underwater and in coastal features. Coastal features now show new building reference points.
Author Peter Bruce has included details of the upper reaches of Solent rivers and creeks, hence the title of the book has been changed to Solent Hazards and Secrets.
The book can be found in most chandleries and is available from the publisher, Boldre Marine, priced £16.95.
