Elliott Star 7 Agrevo Sports 3

Aubrey Cup Round One

Star are in the 2nd Round of the Aubrey Cup after an amazing sequence of events in their match against Agrevo.

A devastating opening blitz saw Star go 3-0 down before they pulled a goal back just before half-time.

They then managed to level matters up to send the tie into extra time.

Star suddenly found their range in front of goal and hit four without reply, with Phil Reid bagging a quick hat-trick, to seal a 7-3 win.

The win was all the more surprising after Star were reduced to ten men for much of the game when Russ Agombar was sent off for fighting.

It was Agombar who missed a glorious opportunity to open the scoring on three minutes.

Almost immediately Gavin Day and Danny Wicks collided in defence to present Agrevo with an opening in front of goal they failed to capitalise on. But after ten minutes Agrevo took the lead. The Star back four looked for an off-side decision that never came and the ball was planted into the back of the net. Shellshocked Star then went 2-0 down as Agrevo scored straight from kick-off. Paul Roseman made what proved to be a vital save as the visitors continued to dominate.

But he could do nothing to prevent the opposition increasing their advantage. The ball ran loose after a corner and was dispatched with ease.

Andy Kalouis replaced Danny Wicks on 31 minutes and Matt Jones produced a fine save from the Agrevo keeper.

Star finally got on the scoresheet just before the interval through centre half Phil Reid, pushed up front by manager Brian Renphrey for the game.

James O'Connell came on for Rob Theophile for the second period as Renphrey gambled on a different system of play.

The move seemed to work as Kevin Cooper (47 mins) and Jones (64 mins) made it 3-3 before Agombar rightly received his marching orders.

Jones almost gave his side the win in normal time but his effort went wide after a flick on from Reid.

Reid turned goalscorer two minutes after the restart to put Star in front for the first time in the match.

The same player then scored two quick goals, the second a neat lob, to claim four goals in the match and put Star 6-3 up. Kalouis capped a fine display when he ended a fine solo run with a neat finish.

STAR: Roseman, Wicks (Kalouis), Buss (Chaney), Day, Theophile (O'Connell), Agombar, Plumb, Fenton, Jones, Reid, Cooper.
