The Government is set to introduce a law to make water companies test for the bug which made hundreds of people in the borough ill last year.

A consultation on preventing cryptosporidium, which causes diarrhoea and can be dangerous to the elderly or vulnerable, has been taking place since May.

The results are due to come out this month and could mean strict new standards on water companies in high risk sites like boreholes and reservoirs.

Three Valleys Water warned thousands of households in Barnet and surrounding areas in March last year when water supplies were found to be contaminated. Customers claimed compensation because warnings were only sent out days after the bug was detected. The company was not prosecuted.
