A LEFT wing anarchist group has slammed Haringey Council over a town hall campaign to get rid of graffiti in Wood Green.

Haringey Solidarity Group believes the council is hypocritical for saying it is against graffiti and fly-posting while at the same time allowing advertising hoardings in the borough.

Group member Donald Greenhill said: "Some roads, like Green Lanes, are a shambles and have all sorts of advertising boards about.

"Are posters and graffiti more visually offensive than glowing shop fronts, decaying estate agent signs and advertising hoardings that the council is happy to see disfigure our streets? They can make damaging political statements.

"It seems to us that many of the fly-posters and unapproved interventions have visual vitality that do much to make our streets more vibrant and lively.

"In a world in which people have very few ways of making a statement, it's the only way a lot of people have of saying what they're about."

His comments followed the council's unveiling of a new dust cart especially designed to tackle graffiti and fly-posters.

Mr Greenhill, who refused to reveal what he does for a living or his age, claims he is not opposed to graffiti at all -- even on his own front door.

He said: "I wouldn't mind as such, but then I suppose I don't own the property anyway."
