Surrey began proceedings on Saturday morning, with a comfortable 3-1 win over Berkshire.

Richmond forward Will Cooper equalised Berkshire's 11th minute penalty corner opener within eight minutes from open play.

Surrey's second half scorers were Surbiton's Grant Fulton from a penalty corner (41 mins) and Guildford's Martin Sampson from open play (57 mins).

In the same group Essex defeated the Channel Islands 2-1 and the Channel Islands beat Berkshire 31, before Surrey met Essex in a crucial last game of the day.

Two superb open play shots from either side of the circle, by Guildford's Roly Ward, in the 16th and 22nd minute put Surrey two up.

But Essex came back to equalise before half time with two open play efforts of their own.

They then took the lead from a penalty corner with just nine minutes remaining, only for Fulton to respond likewise within four minutes for a crucial equaliser.

Essex's 5-1 win over Berkshire on Sunday morning meant that Surrey had to beat the Channel Islands by four clear goals in the last game of the tournament to qualify for the semi finals.

Despite racking up a massive 18 penalty corners to only three conceded, Surrey made hard work of reaching their target.

But goals from Fulton, Sampson, and a brace from Karl Stagno got them there with six minutes left - much to the disappointment of the watching Essex squad.

There was still time for Fulton to score again from a penalty corner, which was just as well since the Channel Islanders got a deserved consolation goal from a penalty corner.

But it was too little too late, to prevent some very relieved Surrey players and supporters celebrating their qualification at the final whistle.

Double wins for Weybridge boys

St Georges College, Weybridge produced a hockey double with two wins at the RAF sponsored youth cup final on Sunday.

Having reached the final, the under 14s took on Kent College and stamped their authority winning 6-1.

The under 16s (pictured) didn't have it all their own way as they took on Calday Grange, of the Wirral.

Weybridge trailed 2-0 at the interval, that was pegged back to 2-2.

Another goal for each side meant the match went into a penalty shoot-out, which went the way of Weybridge 4-3.
