The Peace Hospice benefited from a successful patchwork and embroidery exhibition at Borehamwood Village Hall on Saturday.

The event was organised jointly by needlework clubs Elswood Embroiderers, Global Warmers, Tykeswater Quilters and Studios Quilters, and was aimed at raising money for the Watford-based hospice which serves people in Hertsmere.

As well as the many quilts, embroideries, cushions and wall-hangings on display at the hall in Shenley Road, Borehamwood, the 200 visitors had the chance to start their Christmas shopping early with a wide variety of festive gifts which were on sale.

Jean Hipwell, who helped organise the event, believes the exhibition was a success.

She said: "A new feature this year was a block challenge which was an idea thought up by Joan Hayes of the Tykeswater Quilters.

"Members of the group entered a 12in by 12in patchwork square and visitors to the exhibition were asked to choose the winner who was Meryl Lloyd, also of Tykeswater.

"She received a small prize and now has to assemble all 25 entered squares to make a double bed quilt!

"It was fun though and I'm sure she will enjoy the task."

Once finished, the quilt will be raffled for charity or given directly to the hospice along with all the money raised during the event. Lyndal Sheat, right, shows her handiwork to visitors at the needlework exhibition
