The clans prepare for battle

THE gauntlet has been laid down by the reigning champions of the Island Highland Gathering.

The Isle of Wight competition, made up of five traditional Scottish games, is held in support of children's charity Challenge & Adventure.

This year it will take place at Northwood House, Cowes, on Sunday. It is sponsored by Martin and Martin, Red Funnel and HSS Hire.

Up to 12 teams may enter and fight for the title of Highland Clan Champions.

Andrew White, chief clansman of last year's winning team the Tartan Tossers, said: "Sadly my father-in-law became terminally ill last year and upon his request I entered a team for the first time.

"Reporting back to my father-in-law, who at that stage was in the hospice, was one of the proudest, yet saddest moments of my life.

"It is with much pleasure and delight that the Tartan Tossers will be back this year seeking to defend our title in my father-in-law's memory from anyone who dares to try and take it."
