Brunel University is one of the top three favourite universities among employers for engineering and electronics, the latest Graduate Recruiters' Survey has shown.

The survey for 1999/2000 showed the university in Cleveland Road is second in preference only to the University of Manchester's Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST) for engineering graduates.

And it was listed as the third favourite of employers for graduates in electronics, after Imperial College, London and UMIST.

The university's ranking in popularity among employers for electronics graduates has increased by 4.4 per cent over the past five years ,, the biggest rise for all universities in the subject.

'It shows that although we are no longer exclusively a technological university, we have plenty here that Isambard Kingdom Brunel, [an engineer after which the university is named] would be proud to give his name to,' said a spokeswoman for the university.

The rankings, based on 200 recruiters' perceptions of 97 universities, are published as Signposts to Employability 2000 ,, a guide for professionals, teachers, academics and careers advisors and included in Choose-a-Uni ,, a directory for employers, university applicants and undergraduates.
