CHESHAM United gained a much-needed boost on Tuesday with a 2-0 win away at Hampton & Richmond in the Ryman League Premier Division.

After picking up only four points in the last six games, including a 2-1 defeat to lowly Borehamwood, the Generals bounced back with a good performance thanks to goals by DJ Campbell and Paul Fewings, back from injury.

Chesham manager Bob Dowie was very pleased with the win.

He said: "I was delighted. We were against a side on a good run and to go there and win well was very pleasing.

It was a good win and much-needed after Saturday's poor performance."

Campbell, after a poor showing on Saturday, was the Chesham hero. He scored the first goal in the first half and then laid the second on a plate for Fewings.

In injury time, Campbell broke clear, drew the goalkeeper and squared it to Fewings who could not miss.

But Dowie was most pleased with the clean sheet.

He said: "We defended a lot better. If you look over the season, we've been hard to score against and that hasn't been happening recently."

Chesham welcomed back Alvin Watts after a lay-off and there was a debut for new boy Tim Cook, who joined the Generals from Maidenhead.

They formed a solid partnership in the centre of defence and pleased Dowie with their no-nonsense defending.

Dowie said: "I think they're both similar. They're both no-nonsense centre-halves.

"Tim did great for us and he has a fantastic long throw.

"They're defenders rather than footballers. Hampton are good at set-pieces but we defended them all very well."

But the defending on Tuesday was a far cry from Saturday against Borehamwood when Chesham conceded two goals at the start of the second-half, both from set-pieces.

Chesham had been cruising going into the break 1-0 up after Richard Graham had scored following a good Chesham move.

But two early goals knocked the Meadow men back and they were never able to get back on level terms.

Dowie said: When you look at the timing of their goals, in the 48th and 52nd minute, it shows we never got going in the second half."

"We were a little unfortunate not to get a point. It was a bit of a sickening loss."

Chesham head into Saturday's game against third-placed Grays Athletic with Wayne Andrews and Ernie Cooksey doubtful, with Fitz Hall struggling with a niggling injury.

DJ Campbell is likely to start as Dowie tries to keep hold of him till the rest of the season, though he is not looking to make the move permanent.

Dowie said: "He's got two years left on his contract at Stevenage and on far too much for us.

"But we've got a few things in place for next season and we'll be looking at things shortly."
