Adopt-a-bottle and save water

THE Bestival Foundation and the Footprint Trust have joined forces to launch Adopt A Bottle, a scheme to distribute recycled bottles to Island youngsters to encourage them to save water.

Every primary school child will be given a Josie da Bank-designed recycled Brita water bottle.

In addition to the Adopt A Bottle scheme, Island schools will have the opportunity to host free water-saving workshops. Staff and pupils will get advice on reducing water waste and water bills in schools and homes and improving habitats for wildlife.

Island schools are already booked for workshops. Eco-audits will also be part of each visit. The workshops will be followed up by visits where staff and pupils will discuss their progress in saving water relevant members of staff. There will also be discussions with site managers and caretakers, to find ways of saving water.

Water workshops will focus on:

Water in the world: In other countries people don’t have enough water. Some people have water but it is not safe to drink. Why?

Someone on the Island uses about ten times more water than someone in Africa. Why? What can we do about that?

The IW imports 25 per cent of its water from the mainland. Is that a good thing?

Everyone in the UK has access to clean drinking water. In Cuba, 91 per cent of the population does. In India, 84 per cent, Turkey, 81 per cent, Pakistan, 66 per cent but Papua New Guinea, only 49 per cent. Why?

The human body is about 70 per cent water. Without clean water, people — particularly children — can become ill and die. What needs to be done?

To book a workshop, you can call Ray at the Footprint Trust. On 01983 822 282 or e-mail ray@footprint-trust.co.uk. More information on Adopt A Bottle is available on www.bestivalbottle.net
