Green scheme helps farm

A RECYCLING project that has helped lead to 250,000 trees being planted in Africa, as well as raising cash for an Island cause, has had its latest boost thanks to eco-minded Islanders.

Haylands Farm, with the IW Council and Island Waste, have been responsible for collecting aluminium cans on the Island over the past 12 years, recycling them as part of a campaign called Recycle for Africa.

At Haylands Farm on Tuesday, the latest batch of cans was handed over to the campaign, run by not-for-profit organisation Alupro, working with British charity Ripple Africa.

The cans will be recycled and for every tonne recycled on the Island the campaign will plant a fruit tree in Malawi.

Haylands Farm manager Charles Cook said: "We are delighted residents have got behind the campaign, which runs until June 2010.

"I am urging residents to keep recycling their cans through our can banks around the Island. Each can counts towards helping this worthy project and it also helps Haylands Farm as we turn the aluminium cans into cash, which helps us maintain the farm and run our projects."

For every tonne collected the farm receives £400, he said.

Lynn Clark, of Island Waste, said they had supported the farm for many years.

With summer approaching campaigners hope there will be even more cans recycled and extra collection boxes are available for anyone interested in supporting the scheme.

Anyone who would like a box can contact Charles Cook on 01983 566038.
