Recycled goods given new uses by sculptor
Island sculptor David Badman.
AN EXHIBITION of birds, fish and other hand-crafted creations, made from recycled steel, can be viewed at Newport’s Quay Arts from next month.
Entitled Metal Nature, the display is a collection of sculptures inspired not only by the Island and its environment, but also by the location of the exhibition space, the Bridge Wall.
Sculpted by Island-born David Badman, the pieces have been created especially for the wall.
Designed to echo wildlife seen around the River Medina, the pieces are made from reclaimed steel, from items such as reinforcing rod from crushed concrete, steel sheet from scrapped motor vehicles and stainless steel, rescued from marine industry scrap bins.
It can be viewed from Tuesday, June 9, until Tuesday, September 1.
David has no formal artistic qualifications but has always worked in creative fields. Having trained and worked initially as a screen-printer, he joined the creative team at Blackgang Chine in the 1980s.
He now creates sculptures, ranging from hand-held tactile pieces to free-standing forms for the home or garden.
He also works on various art projects with schoolchildren and people with learning difficulties and builds interactive archaeological models for places such as Brading Roman Villa.
