Fitting the solar panels. Homeowners can use feed-in tariffs to pay for them.
HOMEOWNERS on the Island can apply for free solar electric systems, under a new scheme from HomeSun, a solar power company.
There are thousands of 3.5kWp solar electric (PV) systems available. The offer includes the system itself, installation and 25 years’ maintenance. You must have a south-facing, unshaded roof of around 30 square metres. If your roof doesn’t qualify, you may still be eligible for SolarShare, an £11,000 solar PV system for a one-off payment of £500, plus £5 per month
Living in one of the sunniest parts of the UK, Islanders can generate lots of their own energy, saving around a third off electricity bills and cutting their carbon footprints.
Since April, electricity companies have had to pay for solar electricity produced by homes. The payments, feed-in tariffs (FITs), are part of the government programme to reduce carbon emissions.
Under the new scheme, HomeSun receives the FITs to recoup their investment. The homeowner receives free electricity from the sun.
Green services provider Eaga, HomeSun’s installation partner, has been operating on the Island for some time. Working with South Wight Housing Association (SWHA), Eaga has installed renewable energy in more than 200 properties.
One couple, who have recently had a solar PV system and air-source heat pump fitted by Eaga in their SWHA home in Chale Green, have seen monthly fuel bills fall from around £38 to around £10.
Daniel Green, chief executive at HomeSun, said: "The IW is one of the sunniest places in the UK and residents could save around a third of their electricity bill by generating their own solar power. We’re pleased to be working here and creating local job opportunities."
