Wind turbine plan for Wroxall farm

By Martin Neville - Friday, July 3, 2009

A SINGLE 45-metre blade height wind turbine could be built on land at Span Farm, near Wroxall.
It would generate electricity to power the working farm in Rew Lane and its associated enterprises, as well as provide a back-up supply for the Stenbury Down mobile phone mast situated to the west of the farm.
The rest would go into the National Grid.
The medium-sized turbine would stand around 45m from the ground to the tip of the blade at its highest point.
A report submitted with the application states: "Where it will be visible it will be seen either partially or against the backdrop of the land behind.
"It will also be viewed in conjunction with the existing mast for telephone communications on the top of the land of Span Farm and the further aerial operated by the Civil Aviation Authority further north."
The application has been lodged by Robert and Felicity Corry who expect more farms to follow suit in a bid to offset their carbon footprint and electricity costs.
Mrs Corry said the turbine was well screened from Wroxall by a 40-acre wood, would be no higher than existing aerials and was very quiet.
The application has, however, attracted some objections, including one from Wroxall Parish Council, which fears the turbine will have a prominent impact on the skyline.
"Constant background noise will permanently destroy the peace and quiet of the surrounding Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and impact on residents," it said.
Councillors added any economic benefits were outweighed by the environmental considerations.
