THE BUS service into Haylands and Binstead cannot be maintained in its current form, Southern Vectis has said and the council is unable to provide an alternative.
Route 4 from Ryde to East Cowes, which goes through Haylands and Binstead, is under review prior to the new timetable, which comes into operation on April 5.
Southern Vectis operations manager Marc Morgan Huws explained: “We are currently reviewing route 4 as it is significantly under-performing and we are conscious it is an extremely unattractive and long-winded route for people just wanting to go from East Cowes to Ryde.”
A spokesman for the Isle of Wight Council said regretfully it was unable to provide an alternative service because its budget for local bus services was fully committed but this would be reviewed when the current contract with the bus company ended next August.
Patricia Hamilton, of Bettesworth Road, Ryde, said people in Binstead and Haylands were concerned they would be left without a bus service.
“Lots of people use the buses here and I don’t know what we would do without that route.
“Lots of families and businesses would suffer and everyone from young children to the elderly would be affected.”
