Accident-free road is now a hazard

LETTERS From Phil Cave, Newport:
Can I comment on the mealy-mouthed remarks (CP, 17-08-12) made by Peter Hayward, IW Council highways chief, to the very reasonable complaints by the traders in Pyle Street, Newport, about the upheaval caused by the pavement renewal taking a unacceptable length of time.
He says he “understands the problems” which, as we all know, is just a way of saying: “I get a blooming great wage paid into my bank account once a month and don’t really care about any one else.”
He also said the new pavement will be safer for pedestrians and road users. What he conveniently forgets to state is there is now only half the parking for disabled car users.
I have worked in a business in that part of Pyle Street for more than 20 years and, to my knowledge, there has never been any kind of accident at all.
Now due to the new pavement in the past month there has been numerous accidents, pedestrians tripping and falling over the new pavement.
I have tripped myself and have been a witness to a potentially nasty fall by a fit and able person. I shudder to think if an infirm person would have had the same fall.
We all agree the work done has had no sense of urgency, so the longer it goes on the more it is detrimental to all the business concerned.
What Mr Hayward should be saying to the builders is: “Get your fingers out, because you are making business ratepayers in Pyle Street lose customers and so takings through the tills.”
