Carbon credits

Friday, December 1, 2017 - 10:30

From Ian McKie, Totland Bay:

Plans for a Green Brexit (supported by Bob Seely MP) causedsome howls of derision, predominantly from the Left. But by doing so, they aredisplaying their ignorance.

Taking into consideration that the EU’s Linking Directiveallowed for was known as Flexible Mechanisms (carbon credits created viaclimate action in non-EU countries, such as India, China, Russia and Ukraine). The problem was loopholes within the system allowed for a mass manufacture ofozone-depleting refrigeration gases known as CFCs to capture a by-product knownas HFC23, which generated carbon credits; the Environmental InvestigationAgency estimated two billion tonnes of CFCs were generated in this manner, andalso produced a report that in Russia and Ukraine criminal gangs were behindthe fake generation of credits which produced an excess 600 million tonnes ofcarbon dioxide, according to the Stockholm Environment Institute.

Cooking of the books in this way and using bogus and harmfulcarbon credits across the EU resulted last week in the announcement fromBrussels that only seven member states had ‘advanced’ plans for an integratedclimate and energy plan.  And yes, the UKwas one of them, thus dispelling the myth it is the EU leading the charge onclimate. The UK has proved itself under the Conservatives and Lib Dems to befar more advanced than the laggard states. The UK has also been persistentlyarguing for what are known as nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions as thestructures of the EU have been too rigid for countries to go their own way and makea greater contribution to combating climate change. Brexit allows us to followthis path.

Perhaps the critics of Gove’s plan should get to grips withEU climate policy before sounding off.
