LETTERS From Gary and Lena Patterson, Ryde: We were appalled to read (CP, 17-08-12) South Wight Swimming Club will be folding due to increased pool charges following The Heights refurbishment programme.Both our children benefited by learning to swim and progressing into the Island’s competitive swim team. They made many lasting friends and gained the confidence to enjoy other water recreations, I found the reported comments of the IW Council’s deputy director, John Metcalf, both naive and insulting. Mr Metcalf’s directorate, economy and environment, clearly does not fully understand the law of diminishing returns. The council stands to lose £295 a week by imposing a 32 per cent increase in pool hire charges. Is this an example of ‘the council working with the club to keep it going.’? (The council’s car parking charges fiasco repeating itself?)Lack of support to long-established sporting clubs, run almost entirely by volunteers, may just lead to the council having to provide increased funding to the Youth Offending Team. To suggest assistance will be given to seek national funding is just a statement to placate your readers. This council has a poor record of attracting outside funding and when it does so it is seldom sustainable.This council has wasted little time in implementing its interpretation of the Olympic Legacy.
