HARLOW police are warning workmen against leaving tools in their vans, following a spate of thefts in the town.

Thousands of pounds worth of both electrical tools and hand tools are being stolen from vehicles, particularly overnight, and police are now urging residents to be more security minded.

Residents are also advised to security-mark their tools so they can be identified.

Sergeant Andy Bray of Harlow police said: These thefts are putting people out of business. I have seen grown men cry because they have lost their livelihood and face the prospect of replacing their tools.

Police would also like to hear from anyone who is offered the chance to buy tools by door-to-door sales people.

The latest theft took place in Brooklane Field between 8pm on Thursday and 5am on Friday.

A blue Prochem steam machine and accessories, a floor wand, a stainless steel pump spray, and two sets of hoses and mops, worth £3,200, were taken from an L-reg white Ford Escort van.

Anyone with information should ring Harlow police on 641212.
