Memories of night of bombing

Friday, May 19, 2017 - 11:30

From N. Harris, Ryde:
FOR many years I have lived with the memory of the awful night of the Cowes bombing raids.

Although not directly involved, I was a 16-year-old auxiliary fireman, part of a crew sent to Northwood on standby. We were eventually sent to ensure Parkhurst Forest didn’t burn down.
Each year I read about the memorial service.
I would liked to have gone but one thing or another prevented me, until last Friday.
A small group of us gathered at Ryde Cemetery and the short service that followed was the most moving appropriate and meaningful experience of many sad events.
It is good to know the spirit of those far off days is still alive and well among so many people.
