Remember gardeners

Friday, December 1, 2017 - 11:00

From M. D. Kent, ex-garden superintendent, Lake:

Would it be possible to have a commemoration plaqueremembering all the mental health patients who worked on the health authoritygrounds and gardens and in the various greenhouses and also the sewing room atSt Mary’s?

One thing that stands out is that from 1968 to 1990 they didnot have one accident in 22 years.

This must be a record, as they used a great variety of sharpgarden tools and implements.

Back in those days they went to gardens of all IW healthauthority properties in a tractor-drawn open trailer in all weathers.

We had seven patients from Whitwell Unit and four came infrom their homes daily and they all did a 37-hour week.

We had several ladies working in the greenhouses atWhitecroft Hospital, helping the regular staff.

In those days we had every piece of equipment possible, including a full-sized snow plough, a five-gang mower and a tractor-trailerthat held four trolleys.

The garden staff brought the meals from the kitchens dailyand took them round the lower wards at St Mary’s.
