From D L Hatfield, East Cowes:
I am writing to raise the awareness of East Cowes residents to the proposal for the development of the old Well Road car park.

The plans are to erect a three-storey building with four retail units at ground level and nine maisonettes on the second and third levels. No parking will be included for owners of the apartments as there is a 200-space public car park close by and on-road permit parking within 250 metres.
This public car park is also for medical centre patients and a recent suggestion to increase permit parking in the town was thrown out, so there are only a limited number of these spaces available. It seems developers can shift the provision of parking spaces to the council with impunity at the expense of the present inhabitants.
I also have to question the council’s views that parking in town is not needed because of local transport. Have any councillors used the buses with the exorbitant fares?
The town has had several new shops recently, some of which have since been converted to housing, as have many old shops.
