LETTERS From Miss Sarah Andrews, Ryde:I AM writing with regard to the Ryde Carnival 125 years celebration, which could have been quite an event but, oh what a shame. I’m sure everyone involved worked incredibly hard and put in a great many hours to organise the event, but what happened to the advertising? We went to support the event on the Friday evening in Appley Park but, sadly, the security staff outnumbered the spectators. The fencing around the event was actually putting people off as there were no signs to indicate the entrance and no signs to indicate what was going on. There were no timings for the stage acts and there were no signs in town to advertise the event, so its no wonder it was so poorly supported. We stood in the rain on the Saturday with about a dozen spectators to watch a band from London called Class A and they were a class act but what a shame they were not supported by more people — maybe it’s because no one knew they were on. The carnival programme had the wrong start time for the main carnival, so I wonder how many people missed it this year as the streets were not as crowded as in previous years. So come on carnival committee, get your act together do more advertising and stop messing with the carnival dates. We, as locals who support the carnival year after year, prefer the old dates with the funfair at Simeon recreation ground. It was always an exciting carnival week to look forward to and a fitting end to the summer. Long live Ryde Carnival.
