What has PCC done for Island?

Friday, February 2, 2018 - 10:30

From Dene Francis, East Cowes:
What has the Police and Crime Commissioner ever done for us?
If anyone was pondering such a question and has failed to come up with an answer, you are not alone.
I am confident, however, I could pick him out at an ID parade. The PCC’s strategic blueprint for 2016-2021, entitled A Plan to Keep us Safer has in its 32 pages 44 photographs of Mr Lane.
I’m bound to wonder if part of his office costs extend to the employment of a personal photographer. The document itself is bereft of anything that makes me feel safer or indeed moderately confident moving forward.
It must be kept in mind Hampshire Constabulary covers an area that returned 17 out of 19 parliamentary seats to the Conservatives and elected a Conservative PCC. That’s potentially quite a weight of influence on the Conservative government — if they chose to take up the cause of underfunding of the Hampshire force.
But along with the latest news that Hampshire Constabulary is again to be cut — but only, it appears, the bits of the force that patrol the streets or turn up to help us out in times of emergency — we learn Mr Lane wants to increase the budget for the PCC by £1.14 million.
Doubtless the thin blue line will be relieved to know, that while they are short staffed and dealing with a challenging and often dangerous operational workload, at least the PCC is well resourced for his job.
John Apter, chairman of Hampshire Police Federation, was prompted to declare he would not have supported the PCC’s call for an increase in council tax, had he known the PCC did not intend to whole heartedly target those funds towards frontline policing.
Mr Apter is reported to have used the word ‘misled’ when commenting on the issue, very strong stuff indeed from a serving officer in relation to the incumbent PCC.
Only a few weeks ago (CP, 05-01-18) Mr Lane was selling his proposals to increase the police precept element of council tax to ‘maintain and restore policing in certain areas’. Why, when appealing for funds, did he not make clear his ambitions to expand his own administration?
So here on the IW, possibly the most under-resourced district command in one of the nation’s most under-resourced constabularies, I beg to question: what has the PCC ever done for us?
