100 years ago

December 8, 1917

An appeal was issued to the women of the Island to helpcreate a new ensign for the Royal Navy.

One of the new ships was named Vectis and Victoria Milford,of East Cowes, wrote it was a tradition for women to present the ship whichbears the name of their home with a silk ensign to be flown when going into action.

She added: “I am sure that the women of the IW will be gladand proud to keep up this custom now, in the days when our Navy is protectingand defending us all.”

 

75 years ago

December 18, 1942

There was mixed news from sea in this week’s war news.

The Walters of Ventnor lost their eldest son, Wally, afterhis ship was torpedoed in October. He had been working as a wireless operatoron a merchant vessel.

However, news reached Mrs Chambers, also of Ventnor, theirson had been found safely. Petty Officer Kenneth Jenkins had been serving in aship lost in North Africa but had arrived home safely.

 

50 years ago

December 23, 1967

The previous week’s snowstorm affected the IW.

People had been left without milk and bread, and childrenwere stranded for several days. Efforts were discussed to re-open the railwaybetween Shanklin and Ventnor.

 

25 years ago

December 18, 1992

Dinosaur bones were being dug up along the Island coastlineand sold for up to £100,000, Island MP Barry Field claimed.

He wanted government legislation to stop pirates digging atvaluable fossil sites and advocated a coastal protection zone.

However, he was criticised for naming such a high price,with other MPs saying he risked new pirates flooding to the Island in search ofriches.
