Looking Back at the Isle of Wight January 19, 2018

Ten years ago: Val Walker, one of the Island’s longest serving fish and chip shop staff, retired after 27 years at Corrie’s Cabin. Val said she never expected to stay in her job as long as she did, but she loved everything about her work. Shop owner Derrel Mooney said, “We had quite a laugh with her and she will be be missed.” Val is pictured receiving a card from customer Patrick Garriock, five.

100 years ago
January 19, 1918
YARMOUTH was bombarded by a German raider. The fire lasted about five minutes with some 20 shells falling in the town. Three people were killed and ten injured. The material damage done was not serious.

75 years ago
January 23, 1943
Ventnor had its fifth and most serious air attack on Sunday. The bomb cut through St Boniface Villa, doing much damage and ricochetting into the back of a wireless shop before exploding on the lawn. There were seven fatal casualties as two bombs were dropped in the main street. One fell on to the lawn of a house, wrecking it and killing two of the occupants.

50 years ago
January 20, 1968
A party of officials from Jersey, visiting the IW for a week, were so impressed by the fire service they decided to model their new Channel Island station on the one at Bembridge. Jersey’s one station was found inadequate to cover the whole island and the party was sent to inspect the IW’s systems at the recommendation of the Home Office.

January 22, 1993
An ambitious £2 million scheme to give Ryde’s ‘tatty’ Esplanade station a much-needed facelift was announced this week. The plan aimed to be in place by 1994 and featured an open piazza leading to a new bus station. Although supported by councillors, the development hinged on funding.

January 18, 2008
High-profile comedian Russell Brand came to take a ‘looky wook’ at the Island — and it was rumoured he was house hunting. Spotted mingling with shop owners and being chased by paparazzi, Brand visited Ventnor Haven Fishery and the Met. He also made a pitstop at a gardening store where he bought six pairs of wellies for clay pigeon shooting.
