100 years ago

November 10 1917

A meeting was held to discuss the purchase of Sandown Pier.

The special committee reported it had taken all thenecessary steps for the acquisition of the pier, which would cost £2,000.

The money would be advanced by Mr Arthur Douglas.

 

75 years ago

November 14 1942

The IW Horticultural Association arranged a tomatoconference at the Unity Hall to discuss how to successfully grow tomatoes. Alarge group attended to hear how to further improve the industry for thefollowing year.

 

50 years ago

November 18 1967

Ventnor Town Hall faced an uncertain future after thecouncil was accused of failing to do its job. It was revealed that because of apublic protest meeting against the closure of the town hall, the council haddecided to keep it open until next October.

November 13 1992

A dog was issued a bus ticket with a difference by SouthernVectis.

The company agreed to give sheepdog Ghillie free travel inrecognition of the work she did visiting St Mary’s Hospital in Newport eachweek.

The dog worked as a therapy pet at the hospital.

November 9 1992

Plans to upgrade the ferries serving Wightlink’s Yarmouthroute went before the town council. While the plans had attracted controversy,Yarmouth mayor Cllr Stuart Dyer said there was a lot of misinformation aboutthe upgrade.

Wightlink chief executive Andrew Willson said without thenew ferries, they could not continue to operate the route.
