Ten years ago: An ancient Island monument was daubed with a white cross by vandals.
The Longstone, which dates back to the Stone Age and is thought to have originally marked the entrance to a burial site, was damaged in the attack. The National Trust consulted experts on how to remove the paint.

October 13, 1917

NEWCHURCH Hostel closed after a successful five months training women to work on the land.
The hostel had trained 30 girls and women, 15 employed on the Island and 15 on the mainland.
Mrs Harcourt reported it was unclear why the Board of Agriculture was closing it and joked perhaps the hostel had been doing its job too well.

October 17, 1942

A local man won the Distinguished Flying Cross.
It was awarded to acting squadron leader, Charles Alfred Cooke, a night fighter pilot, who fought in the Battle of Britain.
During the battle his own plane caught fire and he was forced to bail out. However, after a short time he was back in service.


50 Years Ago
October 21, 1967

A factory manufacturing refrigeration and air conditioning equipment opened in Sandown.
The cost of the project was £300,000 (just under £9.5 million in today’s money) and was stated to be the largest industrial building on the Island to be built as a single unit.

October 16, 1992

Nurse Susan Thynne showed extreme bravery when she dived into stormy seas to save a yachtsman who had washed overboard during a race at the Cowes Week regatta.
A Portsmouth inquest heard two competitors had been killed in the race, despite the best efforts of Nurse Thynne to rescue one of them.

The IW Festival and Bestival were shortlisted for a clutch of honours in the 2007 UK festival awards.
Both were up for best festival in their respective size categories, best line up and best family festival.
The IW Festival would go on to win best major festival and Bestival won best medium-sized festival.
