Fitness fans got a chance to meet the waistline wonder woman. Islanders swapped their exercise videos for the real thing when Rosemary Conley led an aerobics extravaganza at Medina Leisure Centre in 2007. Around 200 people attended two mass workouts as part of the IW Diet and Fitness Roadshow.

October 6, 1917
There was laughter at the Newport Council meeting over the confusion surrounding sugar supplies, with some receiving not enough and others receiving far too much.

The clerk reported that he had seen an additional quantity of sugar had been released for preserving fruit.
He applied for an allocation for the Island. However, he received a supply so small that it was not fit for purpose.
Meanwhile a Mr Shepard reported he knew one applicant who asked for 35lb and had instead received 53lb.

October 10, 1942

An unusual accident took place at Quarr-Hill after dark on Saturday.
Two horses belonging to an army officer strayed from their stables in Binstead Road to Newport Road, where one ran into a car and was killed.
The other was injured in a collision with a Southern Vectis bus.

50 Years Ago
October 13, 1967

Plessey apprentices had their “ingenuity” put to the test when they were asked to design and build an inexpensive ground station to receive signals from satellites.
The apprentices were given a £50 budget — £832 in today’s money.
Six months work went into the system and it was then used with American satellites to produce clear pictures of the earth’s surface.

Chart-topping heart throb Jason Donovan announced his appearance at the Ryde Arena.
The former Neighbours and West End star was set to appear at the end of December with the hopes that he would be followed by other big names.
Arena manager Dale Young said if Islanders turned out to ensure a sell-out concert, Ryde could be included in the circuit for other major pop stars.

An Island couple have organised a carnival in Turkey based on the traditional Ventnor procession.
Peter and Chrissie Clarke planned to recreate a carnival as part of the week-long Calis festival, based on a summer fancy dress theme.
Peter said: “There are 8,000 ex-pats living in the area and we hope a lot them will come along and support the carnival.”
