Nobody wants to be taken for granted as "part of the furniture", but to be highly-regarded as part of the local music culture is something quite different. Drummer Laurie Chescoe certainly fits that bill.

With his Good Time Jazz Band, he has travelled the world as a crowd-pleasing performer in clubs, festivals and theatres. The essence of their appeal is generating fun through strong musicianship.

The band's brand of spirited swing and Dixieland jazz is guaranteed to put a smile on your face and rhythm in your soul within the opening eight bars. Their date tomorrow, September 6, at Blackfen's Woodman should prove the point.

Another longstanding part of the local music scene is the jazz improvisation course at Crayford Manor House, in Mayplace Road East, Crayford. Tutor Ray Batson has run his Saturday afternoon series every autumn for several years.

The seven sessions begin on September 22 and are essentially practical, aimed at people of beginner-to-moderate standard. Participants meet at 1pm, then get the chance of three hours playing. It's friendly and unpressured and there's usually an end of term concert for friends and family.
