IT WAS a bad start to 2014 for Newport today on Saturday as they lost 5-1 at Alresford Town in the Sydenhams Wessex League Premier Division.

Newport, who were third in the table ahead of the game, were unable to contain fifth-placed Alresford from the outset, going 2-0 down inside the first ten minutes.

A goal from Matt Evans early in the second half gave them hope, but two more Alresford goals either side of his effort - all three goals coming in a three-minute window - effectively ended the Islanders' challenge.

The hosts scored a fifth goal in the 90th minute.

East Cowes Vics's trip to Tadley Calleva was called off.

Meanwhile, in the IW Senior Gold Cup, Cowes Sports hosted Northwood and won 3-1, with goals from Joe Adams, two, and Jordan Browne.
