Close call for trophy matches

FOOTBALL

BOTH matches in the first round of the Harold Moody Trophy competition went to the wire on Sunday.

Winless Sands Hotel came close to causing a shock when they held Shanklin for 85 minutes of their match, before hosts Shanklin tapped in a winner.

Jason Smythers and Tom Dawson netted two each for Shanklin, with Cameron Roovis, David Smith and Sam Pendleton scoring for Sands.

The other match went to extra time, with Fairway beating High Park Tavern 7-4.

Nine different players were on the scoresheet between the sides, with Scott Wilkinson, Graeme Bast, Ashley Gulliver and Adam Sturgess netting for High Park, and Max Cowley, two, Jamie Moody, two, Dan Moody, Brad Kenning and Callum Fielder scoring for Fairway.

In the IW Sunday League, Mad Cow inflicted a 6-1 defeat on leaders Crown, with Iain Seabrook bagging a hat-trick, Harry Wade scoring twice and Dexter Malin adding a sixth. Sam McInnes scored Crown’s consolation.

Shorwell kept up the pressure with a 5-2 win over Royal Canaries (Tom McDonough and Liam Bennett), with Alex Harvey, two, Tom Dye, Lee Richardson and Paul Whittington scoring.
