FOOTBALLCrown 0, Shorwell 2
SHORWELL became the first Island’s first cup winners of the season last weekend, defeating Crown 2-0 in the final of the Albany Cup, staged at St George’s Park, Newport.
Second-half strikes by Mark Burrows, and Harry Dye, who deflected in Gareth Bricknall’s free kick, earned Shorwell the win in front of a bumper crowd.
Crown’s chances of a comeback were curtailed shortly after, when Kieron Ford was sent off for a stamp and Danny Mew was sent for an early shower, following a second bookable offence.
Shorwell last won the trophy in the 2003-04 season.
Crown: Plumbley, Squibb, Mason, Reed, Bowers, L. Mew, Ford, Daniel Mew, Sprooles, Hart, Danny Mew.
Shorwell: Westerhoff, Herbert, Burrows, Rann, Mitchell, Blackwell, T. Dye, H. Dye, Harvey, Bridges, Bricknall.
