SHANKLIN sealed glory in the Hampshire Women’s Cup on Sunday, with a thrilling victory against Winchester.

On a glorious day in Gosport, the Islanders took the lead in the 15th minutes, when Rachel Cox fed a great ball to Dannie REGAN, who slotted home.

Ten minutes later, a shot from Georgia Dye was not gathered by the goalkeeper and player of the match, Sarah WRIGHT, scored into an empty net.

Play stopped for ten minutes to treat the Winchester goalkeeper and although she could continue, the break caused a lapse in Shanklin’s concentration, and Winchester pulled a goal back.

And with half time approaching, they then levelled.

Shanklin, after a stern team talk from manager Carl Russell, came out in the second half all guns blazing and got their reward in the 53rd minute, when WRIGHT pounced on a loose ball to regain the lead.

Winchester threw everything at Shanklin but the back four of Megan Alder, Kelly Thorne, Beki Rider and Kelly Smith, all stood firm and helped the side to a famous victory.

Shanklin: Hill, Alder, Thorne, Rider, K. Smith, Kilcullen, Borgmann, Dye, Wright, Cox, Regan. Subs: Thornton, Moul, Davis, Tayler, H. Smith, McGauley-Cave, Bennett.
