NEWPORT reached the quarter-finals of the Sydenhams Wessex League Cup tonight (Wednesday) after crushing Hayling United 5-1 at St George's Park.

The hosts took almost an hour before pulling away from their opponents and by the end, victory was very comfortable.

Tom McInnes gave Newport the lead in the 22nd minute, before Cooper equalised for Hayling ten minutes later.

But when Iain Seabrook got the go-ahead goal in the 65th minute, the floodgates opened, with GC Giancovich, Aleks Przespolewski and Jared Wetherick getting on the scoresheet.

The win came a day after victory for another IW side in the competition.

On Tuesday night, East Cowes Vics knocked out higher league Alton Town on penalties. The sides had drawn 2-2 after 90 minutes - Freddie Knowles and Chris Elliot with the goals - before a goalless period of extra time.

Adam Shepherd netted the winning penalty.
